Finding Work

Where to Find Construction Tenders in South Africa: 9 Free Sources

You don't need to pay a subscription service to find construction tenders in South Africa. Public tenders are, by law, advertised openly. Here are nine free places to find building and civil work — from national government to private developers — and how to make sure you can actually bid on them in time.

💡
Before you hunt for tenders, make sure your CIDB grading qualifies you for the size of work you're targeting, and that you can price a BOQ quickly enough to meet closing dates.

Government & public-sector sources

National · Free

1. The National eTender Portal

The central government portal where organs of state publish tender opportunities and awards. It's the first place to look for public construction work across departments and spheres of government, and it's free to search. Set up saved searches for your province and work class.

National · Free

2. The Government Tender Bulletin

A weekly publication listing tenders advertised by national and provincial departments. It's the official gazette of public procurement and a reliable, free way to see what's being advertised each week.

Local · Free

3. Municipal & metro websites

Municipalities advertise a huge volume of building, roads, water and maintenance work on their own websites (look for a "Tenders," "SCM" or "Bids" section). Bookmark the metros and district municipalities in your operating area — City of Cape Town, City of Johannesburg, eThekwini, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and the districts near you.

Provincial · Free

4. Provincial departments

Departments of Public Works, Human Settlements, Education and Health run large construction and maintenance programmes. Each province publishes its own tenders — check the provincial government and departmental sites directly.

SOE · Free

5. State-owned entities

Eskom, Transnet, SANRAL, PRASA, the water boards and others procure large volumes of construction and civils work through their own supplier/tender portals. Register as a supplier where relevant to receive notifications.

Industry · Free

6. CIDB register & i.Tender

Beyond grading you, the CIDB publishes construction-specific tender information. Keeping your registration current also ensures you show up correctly when public buyers verify your grade.

Private-sector & relationship sources

Private · Free

7. Private clients & property developers

Not all work is public. Property developers, retail chains, mining houses and body corporates all tender private construction and maintenance contracts — often with faster decisions and fewer compliance hurdles. Watch developer and consultant (QS/architect) websites and newsletters.

Subcontract · Free

8. Main contractors (subcontract packages)

If you're a specialist trade — electrical, plumbing, steel, finishes — the fastest route to work is subcontract packages from main contractors who've won a project. Build relationships with the larger firms in your region and get on their preferred-subcontractor lists.

Social · Free

9. LinkedIn & industry groups

Tender opportunities, RFQs and subcontract calls are shared constantly in South African construction groups on LinkedIn, Facebook and WhatsApp. Follow QSs, project managers and developers, and join active tendering groups for your province.

The real bottleneck isn't finding tenders — it's bidding them in time

Most contractors are surprised by how many tenders they qualify for. The problem is capacity: if pricing one BOQ by hand takes two or three days, you can only respond to a few of the opportunities you find before they close. Every tender you spot but can't price in time is lost work.

That's the gap TenderGenie closes. Upload the BOQ from any of the sources above — PDF, Excel or a scan — and the AI prices it from live South African supplier rates, generates the tender documents, and gets you to a submission-ready package in under an hour. You find more, and you can actually bid more.
